Posted by Jacqui Blanton on Dec 25th 2013

Beginning on Jan 1, 2014, incandescent 60- and 40- watt light bulbs will be banned. Which means it will be illegal to import or manufacture them. Retailers can sell of the stock they have but not get more. They are being banned to comply with the efficiency standards in the Energy Independence Security Act that was passed in 2007. Only about 10% of an incandescent light bulb's energy is converted into light making them very inefficient. It is said that consumers will save $13 billion in a year once all light bulbs are efficient. LEDs cost more up front but offer more savings in the long run. When shopping for new energy efficient light bulbs check the brightness. The new bulbs are measured in lumens instead of watts. A 10-watt LED is as bright as a 60-watt incandescent light so make sure to check the brightness. click here for a useful comparison chart.
