With the holidays in full motion, the last thing you want is for you or a family member to get sick. Here are some easy, simple ways to ward off old man winter.
- Vitamin C. Vitamin C can help reduce the severity of cold symptoms because it acts a natural antihistamine and can reduce histamine levels. It can also shorten the duration of the cold because it gives the immune system one of its important nutrients. Vitamin C also has antioxidant properties that protect cells and their DNA from damage and mutation. This trait can help with cancer prevention.
- Stay Rested. Not only does your brain function better with sleep, but making sure you get plenty of rest when you first come down with a cold or flu can help your body direct its energy towards your immune system. Your entire body will function better with rest and you will inevitably be healthier with more rest.
- Elevate. When I was younger, I used to get the worst ear infections. My mother always told me to sleep upright so that the drainage didn’t spread to my other ear. Turns out, she was logical in giving me this advice. Sleeping elevated helps to aid your body in draining the nasal passages. This doesn’t mean you have to sleep sitting up, but an elevated slope is better for your sinuses than lying down flat.
- Stay hydrated. Your body is composed of 60% of water. This is why staying hydrated makes perfect sense. It helps to balance out your body fluids and can even help control calories. Water also helps to energize muscles and transport waste products in and out of cells—which helps your kidneys.
